Pain, pain, go away…
Wait, doesn’t that nursery rhyme start with the word “rain”?
In any case, you may feel similarly about poor weather as you do with uterine fibroid pain — meaning you simply want it to go away.
But might that not also raise another question about the relationship between the two? Specifically, with pelvic pain being one of the most commonly-experienced uterine fibroid symptoms, can the weather actually make it worse?
How Pelvic Pain Rains On Your Parade
“Diagnosed women with uterine fibroids [experience] significantly more … pressure on the bladder or inside the abdomen as well as chronic pelvic pain” in comparison to women living without diagnosed uterine fibroids, according to a 2012 study conducted by BMC Women’s Health.
But why, you may ask, do uterine fibroids cause such significant pain? And why is this particular symptom so common?
Simple: The larger a fibroid grows, the more it will push up against the surrounding organs, thereby generating internal pressure and pain. Additionally, how a woman experiences that pain, as well as how severe her pain is, may also be determined by the location or type of uterine fibroid she has.
Feeling Under the Weather?
Scientists today are still researching to what degree the weather may affect an individual’s experience of pain, though patients living with fibromyalgia and arthritis, specifically, are the most likely to say their pain increases with changes in temperature and barometric pressure.
While there are currently few studies regarding the relationship between weather and fibroid-related pain, studies do indicate that “women seem to be more sensitive to weather conditions in association with physical symptoms, especially higher humidity and lower temperature.”
Thus, it is likely that women living with uterine fibroids in addition to other physical ailments, such as arthritis, may indeed feel an overall increase in their discomfort or pain during drastic weather changes.
That being said, as fibroid pain is primarily the result of the internal pressure driven by fibroid growth, weather is not likely to affect fibroid pain, specifically.
You Can Stand Under Our Umbrella
Regardless of whether or not the weather will enhance a woman’s level of pain or perception thereof, one thing is certain: If you are living with uterine fibroids, you should seek professional treatment in order to mitigate symptoms and find long-lasting relief.
