For some, the mere thought of having uterine fibroids conjures the mental image of laying in bed, hunched over in pain with their arms wrapped woefully around their torso.
But… is this reality? Does having a fibroid mean you’ll inevitably experience pain?
Let’s find out:
Do Fibroids Always Mean Pain?
First and foremost, we want to assure you of one thing: Just because you have fibroids does not mean you will always have pain. In fact, some women living with uterine fibroids are asymptomatic entirely.
“Many women have uterine fibroids sometime during their lives,” Mayo Clinic explains. “But you might not know you have uterine fibroids because they often cause no symptoms. Your doctor may discover fibroids incidentally during a pelvic exam or prenatal ultrasound.”
Additionally, even if you do experience pain, that does not necessarily mean it will be chronic. Patients are often able to find relief through various treatment methods involving medication, hormone therapy, and more.
But if you do experience fibroid-related pain, it might not look the same as another woman’s pain.
Where Does Fibroid Pain Manifest?
While uterine fibroids grow on and/or around the uterus, different women may experience pain in different locations throughout the body.
Most often, “women with large fibroids may feel heaviness or pressure in their lower abdomen or pelvis,” according to UCSF Health. “Often this is described as a vague discomfort rather than a sharp pain. Sometimes, the enlarged uterus makes it difficult to lie face down, bend over, or exercise without discomfort.”
That being said, other women may also experience back pain, leg pain, or even urinary discomfort.
However, no matter how your symptoms manifest, there is always a trusted solution available.
Who Can I Call for Fibroid Relief?
Cleveland Clinic reports that “The symptoms of uterine fibroids usually stabilize or go away after you’ve gone through menopause because hormone levels decline within your body.” That being said, you shouldn’t have to wait out the years just to find relief from fibroid-related pain and discomfort.
